The Rookie Rendezvous Is Fast Approaching!
Author Last Post
A few more pieces of information for the Rookie Rendezvousers.

The weather forecast has not changed, actually improved slightly. There is still a chance of showers sometime Saturday through Sunday.

The campsites are on the ball field as they were last year. Exact coordinates here: https://goo.gl/maps/AyS6S7FyFWF2

Stephe and I will be arriving between 2 and 3pm Thursday afternoon. If you're interested in car pooling please reply to this forum thread or let me know.

P.S. Don't forget your paddle!
Rookie Rendezvous is this Weekend!

Spots are available and there is still time to sign up. There are currently 6 members registered, but I know there are others that will be there, so please register if you haven't yet.

Stephe or I will be available at the Wednesday social paddle if you are interested but still wondering if you should come. If you can't make the Wednesday social paddle, please contact me as I will be around tomorrow (Tuesday) anytime.

I'm really looking forward to this weekend, it should be a great time.

Right now the weather looks like it will cooperate with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s/60s. There is currently a chance of showers/storms at some point during the weekend, so be sure to bring some rain jackets.

Lake Superior water surface temperatures will be in the mid 60s.

Think I'd like to go on this trip.

Tom or Stephe, could you get in touch? Question about rescue.

Thanks,

Howdie, fellow paddlers of the purest of waters!

Just a reminder to members that the Rookie Rendezvous is 17 days away! Yeehaw! I see that two people have registered--one from the East Coast. It seems we have an interstate alliance.
Tom and I would like you all to know that if you plan to join us on this trip that
a) It is super fun,
b) It is on lake Superior,
c) It is an over-nighter at the Little Sand Bay campground (Here's the Google Maps
link: https://goo.gl/maps/OxFwf),
d) It only costs $35!!!!!!!
e) You will need to supply your own camping and eating needs,
f) You will need to have Tom or me check your self-rescue and assisted-rescue skills
as well as your gear/kayak before you register.

If you are intimidated by it all, don't be. It's a whole boat load of fun and it's safe. If you are wondering how to get your skills and your kayak/gear checked off, just email me at stepheconnelly@gmail.com. We can set up a time and place to do this.
The social paddles are a great opportunity to check off. We are paddling at River View Park this Wednesday and if you bring the kayak you plan on using at the Rookie Rendezvous, I or Tom can check your gear and skills off and even teach you the skills you need for the trip. It's really no big deal. If you don't have the required kayak or gear, we can probably find loaners for you. No sweat.
At the Rookie Rendezvous you can expect an introductory paddle along the shore on the first day (to get newer paddlers at ease with the Big Lake). We can also work on safety and rescue skills that first day.
On one of the remaining three days we will do a crossing to Sand Island, which has sea caves and a light house. It's very cool. We usually drive to some other launch spot for a group paddle along the shore or the sea caves near Meyer's Beach. And the camping is fun; with our group you can expect to laugh much and eat well.
The paddling gear you will need for the trip include a pfd, spray skirt, wet suit or dry suit, a sea kayak with bulkheads fore and aft or suitable alternatives, and, of course, a paddle. These are necessary. Email me if you are not sure whether your kayak or gear is adequate.

I hope to see you there.
