Pure Water Paddlers

Minutes of Meeting 2/09/05

The meeting opened with introductions by everyone to welcome new and old members.

Old business and events that took place between the last meeting and this meeting were discussed.  On January 22, a successful Deep Water Safety class (10 people) and First Aid in the Wild class (8 people), were held with a great turnout despite the snowy weather that day.  The Deep Water Safety course qualifies you to rent kayaks in Bayfield, for paddling on Lake Superior.

On January 29, a fun day, a small group of five went skiing at Trollhaugen with a stop at Turtle Lake Casino, the trip was suggested by John Plesac.

The election of officers were announced:

·        Brenda Puck – President

·        Patty Schulz – Vice President/Trip Coordinator

·        Theresa Raven – Secretary/Treasurer

·        Ken Sebranek – was officially appointed as our historian/photographer

·        Jon Brutlag – was officially appointed as our webmaster

Thanks to everyone for their hard work and dedication to the running of our Purewater Paddlers organization.

New Business:

Mentioned was the Charter election process, apparently our charter does not state how and when terms for officers start and finish.  How do we update the charter to incorporate this information?  (I have attached a copy for everyone to review before the next meeting).  Discussion of this will be held again at our next meeting.

Also for renewing members, the liability and membership forms need to be submitted only if there are to be any changes you wish to pass on.

Deep Water Safety training – Brenda is checking w/Stout Adventures to schedule additional dates for those interested in attending.  She is also looking into getting some open pool time where we could bring in our own boats and practice some of our newly acquired skills.  Also mentioned was a class for paddling techniques to get ACA certification for both canoe and kayak.

MCA’s Far North Symposium will be held on the weekend of March 5, 2005.  Paddlers who are interested can find additional information on our website.  There is a link for information regarding times and registration.  I believe it is $9 if you register before and $12 after the 26th.

Canoecopia is scheduled for March 11,12,13 – also additional information and links are available on the website.  A great event to check out, plenty of wonderful speakers and deals on kayak/canoe gear and accessories.  Fees are $10 per day or $15 for the entire three days.  Also anyone looking to sell a boat or pick up a deal on a boat check out the parking lot.

April 1st will be here before you know it and the Duncan Creek Run will be held that day (Friday).  More details to come for those interested in joining the event.

April 2nd is our paddle on the Yellow River.  The Halfway Bar has offered free beer to paddlers that participate that day.  Renee and Ken are making posters to promote the event.

April 9th was scheduled for paddling the Flambeau River, it was suggested to move it to the 10th and to possibly paddle Rice Creek in Minneapolis on the 9th instead.

Dave Carlson – Northland Adventures would be interested in filming an event that we have if it relates to some other story or event that involves the area or river.  An example would be when we paddle one of the Jim Falls dam releases and Dave could tie it into the comeback of the sturgeon population in the river.

Also mentioned was our organization participating in some sort of river clean up project.  Gigi Stafne is going to contact the City of Eau Claire about cleanup of the river before and after they hold their RCU event downtown.

The logo contest ends on March 1st.  At this time there are 6 entries.  On 3/2 Jon will send out a link to members where you can preview the entries.  Members are to vote for their three top choices electronically and at the next meeting on 3/9/05 we will vote for our final choice.   The deadline to vote for the three top choices will be 3/7 at midnight.

Another upcoming event for April will be the Midwest Mountaineering Spring Expo.  They also have speakers, gear, and deals on boats.  If you are not successful at Canoecopia check this out.  They also have a boat auction on Saturday the 22nd, if you are looking for a deal.  www.midwestmtn.com.

To top off the evening Ken presented his video of our paddling events for this past year, great show, and Glenn provided us with some delicious kettle corn.  If you did not get a chance to see it, you missed a good time.  Maybe we can run another showing of it sometime.
