Pure Water Paddlers
Minutes of Meeting 3/09/2005
The meeting opened with introductions by everyone to
welcome new and old members.
Old business and events that took place between the
last meeting and this meeting were discussed.
- Brenda Puck discussed attending an Outdoor
Leadership Course and a Kayak Rolling Class held through Stout Adventures
at the UW Stout campus.
- Lori Rowan attended the Far North Symposium and
stated that they had really good presentations from individuals about
their adventures.
- The voting was held for the logo contest, to pick
the top three choices.
New Business:
- Canoecopia is this weekend - March 11,12, 13.
Hopefully folks were able to attend.
- April Fools Run on Duncan Creek will be held Friday,
April 1. There will be a breakfast at Shady Pine Bar prior to getting on
the water. Otherwise the put in time is approx. 10:00 am. There will
probably be some paddlers stopping at Gen Loch Saloon for refreshments
about noon. Good places to see paddlers run the creek would be at any of
the downtown Chippewa Falls bridges. See Glenn Felske for details at
gfelske@yahoo.com or check out the website at www.purewaterpaddlers.com
- The Yellow River is scheduled for Saturday, April
2. It will be a good place for a novice/beginner level paddle to
experience some fast water paddling. Start time is 10:30 am at the
Halfway Bar. See Glenn or the website for details.
- The South Fork of the Flambeau River is scheduled
for Saturday, April 9th. This is more of an advanced
whitewater paddler’s river. You should definitely have cold-water gear if
you wish to paddle this river. If you have the Paddling Northern
Wisconsin book, see page 60 for trip details. See Glenn or the website
for details.
- Another option for the 9th is to paddle
Rice Creek in Minnesota. If you paddle Rice Creek you will need to
register your boat at a cost of $9.75 and this is good for 3 years. If
interested, please see Jon Brutlag at ssnvet637@yahoo.com.
- April 16th will be the North Branch of
the Flambeau, also with lots of whitewater paddling. Again you should
consider wearing cold-water gear. In the Paddling Northern Wisc. book see
page 52 for details or see Glenn or the website for details.
- May 22 – 24 is the Midwest Mountaineering Spring
Expo in Minneapolis. The have a boat auction on Saturday and usually have
good pricing on boats and accessories.
There will upcoming dates for anyone interested in
attending a Deep Water Safety Training session with Stout Adventures. Also
we have some dates available for open pool time where we can bring our own
boats or use theirs to practice any skills we would like. The charges are
$15 for 2 hrs of open pool time and $30 for the Deep Water Safety course.
There will need to be a minimum of 4 people and a max of 6 people for each
of the sessions to be held. Stout Adventures will need to have a 2-week
advance notice, so if interested please contact Brenda Puck at puckbs@gmail.com
as soon as you can.
Also if interested they can offer another kayak rolling
class or an ACA Kayak certification course. See the website for all
available dates.
- May 1, Chippewa Falls holds a number of events
downtown including a boat swap and a place for individuals/groups to setup
booths to promote their organizations. Pure Water Paddlers are
considering having a booth at this event. There will be no cost to have
the booth and are considering raffling off a membership as well as running
Ken’s video if we are able to get electricity. Any other thoughts or
ideas are welcome. More discussion will be held at the next meeting on
April 13th. If you would like further information contact Elke
Warner at ewarner@pressenter.com
- A group of three (Glenn, Cheryl and myself) will be
putting together an event leaders packet. Benefits of this will be to aid
leaders in putting together a more successful trip and hopefully encourage
others to lead trips.
- Glenn gave a great presentation on Hypothermia to
the group. If you would like a copy of the information presented, please
let me know and I can email a copy to you.
- Gigi Stafne has now published her book First Aid in
the Wild. It is available for purchase if interested. You can contact
her at fireweed@citizens-tel.net
- The results are in on the logo contest. The winner
is Kyle Doll from Elk Mound. There will be a press release regarding this
in the Leader Telegram. You can see the new logo on the website. Renee
and Kyle are looking into pricing option for items that we would like to
have the logo on, such as decals, shirts, hats, etc.
And finally just a reminder, our next meeting is
scheduled for April 13th at 7:00 pm at the Hallie Golf Course
clubhouse. At this time we will discuss when we will start our Wednesday
night paddles.
